Apple Isle Premiership Hawks Gleam with Glenferrie Gold

Tassie Premiership Hawks: Grant Birchall, Paul Hudson, Darrin Pritchard, Ian Paton, Rodney Eade & Peter Hudson

The Glenferrie Gold Life Patrons of the Hawks Museum enjoy several benefits. One of the most anticipated is an exclusive event where the Patrons can see and hear from some of the club’s prominent past players and officials.

On 17 July 2019, the Hawks Museum hosted its 11th Annual Glenferrie Gold Night. It proved a very special evening.

Starting in the Hawks Museum with a viewing of recent acquisitions and refreshed displays, the guests moved to the Players’ Kitchen for footy pies, sausage rolls and other delicacies. It was then time for the evening’s entertainment!

The theatrette at Waverley Park nearly burst at the seams with more than 75 delighted Hawks. There were very good reasons for the wonderful response. A line of twelve Premiership cups at the front of the room set the scene for an evening of stories and memories from six great Hawthorn players – Peter Hudson, Rodney Eade, Ian Paton, Paul Hudson, Darrin Pritchard and Grant Birchall. Each hailed from Tasmania and between them they have played in twelve of the Hawthorn’s thirteen Premierships.

The stories, prompted by questions posed by our lively MC Mike Derum, had the audience hanging on every word. Peter Hudson recalled how he was recruited to Hawthorn, with club officials claiming the Tasmanian full forward before South Melbourne could swoop. He told those gathered just what it was like to play at Glenferrie Oval in an up and coming side during the victorious year of 1971.

Rodney Eade recalled his junior career with Glenorchy under the coaching stewardship of Peter Hudson. How could he play with any other club but Hawthorn after that? He would also wear the Number 26 guernsey of his mentor!Eade played in four Premierships covering two distinct golden ages for Hawthorn – the 1970s with his 1976 & 1978 flags and the 1980s playing in the 1983 and 1986 Premierships. Eade reminisces that he actually has four and a half flags, as he was a member of the 1985 Reserves side that proved such a pivotal team for coming success. He also recalled life playing under John Kennedy Snr, David Parkin and Allan Jeans.

Ian Paton, a member of the 1978 and 1983 sides, relived the exploits of teammates such as Ian Bremner. These stories had Peter Hudson and Rodney Eade in stiches and left the audience and the younger players wide-eyed!

Paul Hudson reminded the audience that while growing up as a Hawks fan, he wore– the number 24 for Peter Knights rather than the famous number 26!He recalled his Hawthorn playing days when he shared the forward line with Jason Dunstall, Dermott Brereton and Darren Jarman as part of the 1991 flag-winning side.

He also reminded us of his State of Origin exploits, playing for a Tasmanian side that upset Victoria in 1990. His captain that day was Darrin Pritchard, who added stories of life under coaches, Allan Jeans and Alan Joyce.Pritchard played in the 1991 Premiership. He was also represented the back to back flags of 1988-89.

The crowd was very happy to see Grant Birchall and a genuine warmth flowed for the backman. He had only just returned to senior football following a two-year battle with injury. His legacy is in four Premierships in 2008, 2013, 2014 and 2015 – another golden era for the club! Birchall discussed the current situation with football in Tasmania as well as his own Hawthorn recruitment story.

The night wound up following fun and probing questions from the floor for our esteemed panel. The answers were at times hilarious, embellished with further comments from the other panellists. Phones and cameras were very busy taking prized photos with these incredible players and their Premiership cups. This evening with our Tassie Hawk heroes was illuminating, thoroughly entertaining and came to an end far too soon!

We have welcomed 25 new Glenferrie Gold Life Patrons this year, 14 of whom received their framed certificates on this special evening.
