KNIGHTS OF THE MUSEUM

Preserving the history, tradition and culture of the Hawthorn Football Club.

OuR HISTORY

In 1925 Hawthorn Football Club joined the VFL and for 32 years were known as the easy beats. Hawthorn languished the bottom rungs of the ladder until 1957 when we made the finals for the first time. Four years later, we hit the pinnacle of success, winning the treasured 1961 premiership. Since then, we have become the most successful team of the modern era, winning another 12 premierships in the past five decades. However, our success hasn’t always led to prosperity. The Operation Payback campaign in 1996, led by our supporters to save our club, gave us a new definition of success, namely that on-field achievement does not always equate to off-field success. It is without doubt, that today our club is defined by our collective resolve to never go back to those times again - to never take things for granted, to never rest on our laurels, to value strong leadership and good governance, to continually innovate and importantly, to always respect what has gone before us, as we build the next generation of success on and off the field.

PROTECT, BUILD AND THRIVE

The Hawks Museum was established to honour and preserve the history and achievements of Hawthorn Football Club while bringing to life the unique stories and unrivalled journey of our club, its players, officials and wider Hawthorn family. It’s unique journey and that of its current creator, Peter Haby, is unrivalled. What 2020 has taught us, is that you need to be future-ready and protect what is most important. Through Hawthorn Football Club’s Foundation, Knights of the Museum has been established to ensure the Hawks Museum continues to survive and thrive for generations to come.

OUR MISSION

The Knights of the Museum will enable the Hawks Museum to remain relevant, innovative and best practice, and not reliant on the operating budget of the club. The aim of the group is to ensure sustainability and growth of the most tangible and visual journey of our great club. As we look to the future and how to tell the story of the Hawks Museum at the Kennedy Community Centre, it is imperative we ensure our cataloguing, digital record keeping, storage and resourcing enables a smooth and seamless transition.
